Cooking with a Camp Oven on the BBQ
While our caravan does have an oven, when we are travelling with friends, we like to spend most of our time outside. That’s when we use our slide out BBQ as a preference.
Our BBQ is an Australian made Sizzler 2 burner gas BBQ. It’s stainless steel and has a high lid with a glass window and is fitted into a tunnel boot, sliding neatly out of the way into the boot when travelling. The default cooking surface is a stainless-steel hotplate. While the Sizzler can be used as a BBQ, cook top or oven, there is no room for a cooking pot on top of the hotplate with the lid closed.
That’s why we purchased an optional cooking rack. We remove the hotplate and place this cooking rack over the two burners (it sits just above them, not touching). Then a pot can be easily be used on the BBQ with or without the lid being closed, transforming the Sizzler into a cooktop and oven.
Pictured are Lamb Shanks cooking away nicely in one of our camp ovens on the Sizzler. They are cooked with the camp oven lid on and the Sizzler lid closed.
